There are countless plans, expenditures and anxieties that go along with preparing for a wedding ceremony. If couples aren't careful they can get so consumed with planning the wedding and attempting to get all the details right that there is little time to enjoy the experience. When my niece was arranging her wedding ceremony she had three bridal showers to attend, reception plans to get in order and was trying to find a location for the rehearsal dinner. The third bridal shower was located at my home. I am her godmother so I had wanted to do something special for her. A few days before the shower we talked on the telephone. She sounded very stressed. She and her fiance were also having difficulties selecting the best wedding songs for the wedding ceremony. I suggested that she come the night before the shower and stay all night and we would relax and I would help her organize a list of what needed to be done prior to the wedding. She thought this sounded like a great plan.
I did most of of the arrangements for the shower prior to my niece coming so that we could give attention to her needs. She shared that the rehearsal dinner was her greatest stress due to the fact that the place they had reserved had double booked, so they needed to locate a brand new location. We started by working on finding the best wedding songs for the wedding ceremony so we could get one need out of the way thereby giving confidence that the other would be dealt with as well. As I imagined finding the best wedding songs was just a matter of searching the net, listening to samples, ordering and that was that. Now to settle the rehearsal dinner.
The wedding rehearsal dinner is traditionally handled by the groom's family; in fact a number of individuals refer to the event as the groom's supper. My niece's fiance is from out of state so his family is is paying for the rehearsal dinner, but they are not able to help with making the arrangements. My niece had touched base with the restaurant where the wedding reception will be held, but the only space available was the area where the wedding reception would be happening. My niece said that the plan was to decorate the reception area before going to the church for the rehearsal.
We called two neighboring restaurants to see if they could accommodate the rehearsal dinner. Both had other gatherings scheduled. Her fiance's parents are divorced, also both have remarried. This meant that there were additional people to incorporate in the rehearsal dinner. This was also adding to her tension due to the fact that she was trying to figure out the etiquette for seating. She had the seating chart approved for the wedding, but not knowing where the rehearsal dinner would be held diminished her capability to prepare a chart.
I asked my niece if she had reached out to the church to see if the fellowship area would be available. Everybody could just mix and have a light catered meal. This would be much less formal and would be relatively easy to plan. The fellowship area was open that day. We called two delis and ordered a buffet meal. My niece called her fiance and told him the brand-new plans for the rehearsal dinner. He thought this sounded fantastic. He would make arrangements to have a buddy of his tend bar and would arrange for the drinks.
The rehearsal dinner was a nice relaxed evening. The guests were able to visit and mingle and the bride and groom didn't feel the need to sit in one spot while everybody ordered their food and had it served. With having a buffet line the tone was very casual and the out of town guests did not have to try and find another place in an area that they were not familiar with.
